So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
