The Red Devils Set to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
The forward, with half a year left on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant boost to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
