Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People using these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
