Gavin Newsom States He Is Considering a White House Bid in 2028

The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he will determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections conclude.

"Yeah, it would be dishonest otherwise," Newsom stated when questioned about seriously considering a campaign for president following the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."

Newsom's tenure as governor concludes in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he cautioned that any decision is a long way off.

"It's up to destiny," he said.

Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic

He has emerged as a prominent opponent of the Trump administration, employing his social media accounts and championing a proposition that would increase the party's House seats in following redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has drawn criticism from adversaries.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a weekend segment on Fox News. The secretary announced plans to withhold federal funds from the state and threatened revoking the authority to provide commercial driver's licenses.

"I intend to cut $160m from the state," Duffy stated, after a this week's fatal crash in California involving an undocumented commercial driver that caused loss of life and four injuries.

The governor's team highlighted that the U.S. government had reauthorized the driver's employment repeatedly, which permitted him to secure a trucking license under federal law.

The transportation secretary had earlier stated he was withholding $40m from California for failing to implement English language requirements for truck drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand U.S. regulations," Newsom's office said in a last month's release countering Duffy's threats. "For now, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: California truck drivers had a death rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."

Public Opinion and Future Prospects

A recent study showed that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate said that Newsom must consider running for the White House in the next election cycle. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has risen to an mean of a third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has dropped from an average of more than 40% to under 40%.

Some time ago, the governor stated while on a trip several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.

"The idea that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, remarkable," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who meets that moment. And that is the issue for the American people."
