We are checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the images were from relied on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating additional structures, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
