Finland Stuns Two-Time Reigning Title Holders US in World Junior Quarter-Finals.

Arttu Välilä scored the decisive goal at 2:11 of overtime as Finland pulled off a stunning 4-3 win over the two-time defending champion American team on Friday evening in the world junior hockey quarter-finals.

"Got to give full credit to the US," stated Finnish captain Aron Kiviharju. "That's a fantastic squad, full of exceptional players and a well coached team. But I mentioned we were seeking that payback from last year, and I believe we truly deserved it this evening."

In the semi-finals on Sunday, Finland will face the Swedish team, while the Canadians will meet Czechia. Sweden beat the Latvian side six to three, Team Canada produced a five-goal first period in a 7-1 rout over Slovakia, and Czechia topped Switzerland by a six to two margin.

Thrilling Final Frame and Extra Session

The Michigan State Spartan Lee Ryker tied it for the United States with one minute and thirty-three seconds remaining in the third period and the Notre Dame netminder N. Kempf off for an extra attacker.

Lee Tuuva and J. Saarelainen scored in a fifty-five-second burst in the third period to hand Finland a 2-1 advantage. He tied it at two-all with seven minutes and seventeen seconds left, then set up his teammate's go-ahead goal with 6:22 on the clock. Saarelainen also earned a helper on Tuuva’s goal.

Key Contributions and Reactions

The BU defenseman Cole Hutson recorded a goal and a helper for the United States after taking a shot in the back of the head against the Swiss and missing two games.

"I thought we executed well for most of the game," the defenseman said. "But the small details that they got, a lot of their high-quality opportunities came from our errors."

His BU teammate C. Eiserman handed the United States a 2-1 edge on a power play with 9:45 left in the middle frame. He took a feed from his teammate and beat the Finnish goaltender with a quick shot from the right circle.

Hutson scored on a rush thirty-five seconds into the second period. Heikki Ruohonen equalized at four minutes and forty-six seconds on a snap shot from the left side.

Goaltending Stats

  • Finland's goalie stopped 28 shots.
  • The American netminder recorded 21 saves.

The Americans lost their final two games – losing 6-3 to the Swedes on Wednesday night in the final preliminary game – after winning their first three.

"It has been an privilege to coach this team," said the team's coach. "Our guys played a terrific game tonight and fell just a bit short. Give the Finns. It's an hollow feeling right now, but our guys gave it all they had."
