Can You Solve It? The Forgotten Netherlands Invention Which Forged the Modern World
One can find many contenders to claim the title of “planet’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.
According to a recent publication, however, that honor belongs to the automated timber mill conceived through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Before mechanised sawing, constructing a modest merchant vessel required approximately 10 sawyers working for three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered sawmills, an identical quantity of processed timber might be produced in less than seven days.”
Owing to this speedy mechanical cutter, which converted logs into boards using almost no manual labor, the Dutch were able to construct ships more quickly compared to anyone else, which sparked a century of Netherlands naval, economic as well as artistic supremacy in the continent and the globe.
The Original True Manufacturing Device
Corneliszoon’s sawmill, contends Dávila, represented “mankind’s first authentic industrial machine.” A windmill turned a gear. A single part converted the rotary movement into up-and-down action for the cutting blade. A separate mechanism changed that same spinning motion into a lateral movement feeding the timber to the cutter. A ratchet system moved the wood forward a measured step per cycle.
“Every component was simple by itself. The Dutchman’s brilliance lay in how to integrate these parts so they acted in a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing on every descending motion and advancing with each upward motion. It was an astonishingly clever application of fundamental components.”
