Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not just his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
