A minimum of thirteen passengers perish and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.

The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
